Colposcopy—What Is It?
-Colposcopy is a gynecologic diagnostic procedure permitting visualization of the cervix under bright light and magnification. It is used to assess changes in the surface patterns of lesions as well as changes in capillary networks. Colposcopy, in America, has recently experienced a rebirth, being used extensively in the evaluation of patients with abnormal cytologic smears. The value of colposcopy und treatment modulities which have emerged as a result of colposcopy, as well as the technique of the examination and implications for nursing, are discussed in this article.Colposcopy is a procedure used in conjunction with the Pap test (cancer detection) to diagnose abnormalities of the female reproductive organs, primarily the cervix and the vagina. It is used most frequently if the Pap smear results suggest that further evaluation is indicated.A Colposcopy is an examination by a Doctor or specialist Nurse (colposcopist). They will look at your cells on your cervix.

The Colposcopist will use an instrument called a colposcope. It looks like a pair of binoculars on a stand. It looks up your vagina to your cervix. It does not go inside your vagina.

If you feel nervous you can visit the Colposcopy clinic first. You can meet the Doctors and Nurses.

You can get to the Colposcopy clinic by bus, a taxi or travel by car. If you require hospital transport you can arrange this with your doctor’s surgery before your appointment.

At the Royal Victoria Infirmary (RVI) main entrance to the New Victoria Wing, follow the signs to the Women’s Health Unit, level 2 behind the café.

What does the procedure consist of?

The procedure is done at the doctor’s office. It requires no sedation and takes ~10-15 minutes. Like with a pelvic exam a speculum will be used to hold the vaginal walls apart. The colposcope which is on a stand, is then placed in front of the vagina in order to visualize the cervix. A solution similar to vinegar is then swabbed on to the cervix to look for abnormal changes. If there are any abnormal changes or lesions, a biopsy will be performed. The biopsy consists of removing a small piece of tissue from the cervix. Often more then one biopsy is needed. These biopsies are then sent to a laboratory for testing.

Your healthcare provider will have you schedule an appointment after the procedure to discuss the results and any further treatment that may be needed.

What is Risks and side effects of a colposcopy?

A colposcopy is a very safe procedure that doesn’t cause any serious problems.

But some women experience:

discomfort or pain – tell the colposcopist if you find the procedure painful so they can try to make you more comfortable
brown vaginal discharge – this is caused by the liquids used to highlight abnormal cells in the cervix and should pass quickly
light bleeding – this can occur if you have a biopsy and should pass within three to five days

Contact your GP if you have persistent bleeding, bleeding that’s heavier than your usual period, smelly vaginal discharge or tummy pain.

There are some additional risks and side effects if you also have treatment to remove any abnormal cells.

What should I do before my appointment?

Avoid scheduling your colposcopy on a date that you will be on your period. Do not place anything in your vagina or have intercourse 24hrs before the appointment.

What should I expect during recovery offter colposcope?

If you have a colposcopy without a biopsy, you should feel fine right away. You can do the things you normally do. You may have a little spotting for a couple of days.

If you have a colposcopy with a biopsy, you may have pain and discomfort for 1 or 2 days. Over-the-counter pain medications can be helpful. You may have some vaginal bleeding. You also may have a dark discharge for a few days. This may occur from medication used to help stop bleeding at the biopsy site. You may need to wear a sanitary pad until the discharge stops.

Your health care provider may suggest you limit your activity for a brief time. While the cervix heals, you will be told not to put anything into your vagina for a short time:

Do not have sex.
Do not use tampons.
Do not douche.

Call your health care provider right away if you have any of these problems:

Heavy vaginal bleeding (using more than one sanitary pad per hour)
Severe lower abdominal pain
Fever
Chills
