A olympus colposcope is a special type of microscope, which allows the doctor to examine the tissues of the cervix, vagina and vulva more clearly by magnification.

What is a olympus olympus colposcope?

olympus olympus colposcope is a simple examination of the cervix with a olympus colposcope. It lets the doctor or nurse look more closely at the changes on the cervix to decide if any treatment is needed.  The procedure is done as an outpatient appointment at hospital.

The olympus colposcope is a low-power microscope mounted on a stand, used to look at the cervix under magnification. The examination is similar to the screening test.

Preparing for a olympus olympus colposcope test:

The olympus olympus colposcope examination itself takes only 15 minutes, but you should allow up to an hour for your whole visit.  This will include consultation with your colposcopist about the procedure.

What happens during the test

For comfort, you may want to wear a loose skirt to your appointment.  If not wearing a skirt, you will be asked to undress from the waist down and position yourself on a special couch, which will have padded support for your legs.

A nurse will be present throughout to assist you as much as you need. The doctor or specialist nurse will gently insert the speculum into your vagina, just like the initial screening test.  This holds open the vaginal walls and allows a good view of the cervix. The colposcopist will look at the cervix through the olympus colposcope (which does not touch you).

Another smear may be taken before a liquid is painted on the cervix to help show up any abnormal areas; this liquid may sting a little.  A small sample of tissue (a biopsy) may be taken from an abnormal area.  The biopsy may be uncomfortable but will not be painful.  Further information is available in the Cervical Screening Information film.

After your examination

After your olympus olympus colposcope you can usually return to work or carry on with your normal day.

What if I need treatment

The colposcopist will explain if you need any treatment. Sometimes this can be done at the time of your olympus olympus colposcope or you may be asked to come back when the results of the biopsy are available.  The treatment is usually simple to remove the abnormal area of cells and can be done under local anaesthetic as an outpatient.  The choice of treatment used will depend on your case.

Will I need check-ups

Around six months after treatment you will usually be offered a cervical screening test again to check that your treatment has been successful. This test will be carried out at the hospital clinic.

If the result is normal/mild/borderline it will be tested for high risk HPV.  If the test is negative for high risk HPV, you will be at low risk of ongoing cervical disease at that point in time.  It will be important that you attend for screening again in three years.

If the cervical screening result shows moderate/severe changes, or if the high risk HPV test is positive, you will be referred for another olympus olympus colposcope.

Although one in five women are invited back for another olympus olympus colposcope, only a few will need further treatment.  This is because it can take longer than 6 months for your immune system to clear HPV after treatment. Your hospital team will keep you under review until they are happy that you can safely return to routine screening tests.

How to Prepare for Your olympus olympus colposcope?

If a olympus olympus colposcope is needed, your OB-GYN will recommend that you:

Schedule your procedure during a time when you are not having your period
Avoid using tampons and vaginal medications for at least 48 hours before the procedure
Abstain from vaginal intercourse for at least 48 hours prior to your appointment
Take an over-the-counter pain reliever about 30 minutes prior to your procedure. You can use either nonsteroidal anti-inflammatories (like ibuprofen, Advil, or Motrin) or acetaminophen (Tylenol).

Having a olympus olympus colposcope can provoke some anxiety and as we mentioned earlier, most patients find the procedure uncomfortable. So Dr. Aliabadi always uses numbing medication on the cervix and Nitrious Oxide (aka “laughing gas”)  which virtually eliminates anxiety and helps with any remaining discomfort.

You may find it comforting to learn more about the procedure prior to your appointment. Make note of any questions or concerns you have and bring them to your doctor ahead of time.

You are also welcome to bring a portable music device with headphones to listen to during your procedure. Many women find that focusing on their favorite music helps them set aside their anxiety and distracts from the discomfort.

How is the procedure performed colcopcope?

olympus olympus colposcope is done in a doctor’s office. You may be referred to another health care provider or to a special clinic to have it done.

The procedure is best done when a woman is not having her menstrual period. This gives the health care provider a better view of the cervix. For at least 24 hours before the test, you should not

douche
use tampons
use vaginal medications
have sex

As with a pelvic exam, you will lie on your back with your feet raised and placed on foot rests for support. A speculum will be used to hold apart the vaginal walls so that the inside of the vagina and the cervix can be seen. The olympus colposcope is placed just outside the opening of your vagina.

A mild solution will be applied to your cervix and vagina with a cotton swab or cotton ball. This liquid makes abnormal areas on the cervix easier to see. You may feel a slight burning.

Why is olympus olympus colposcope performed?

olympus olympus colposcope is most commonly performed after a cervical smear which has shown some presence of abnormal cells. A cervical smear is a routine procedure offered to women between 25 and 65 years of age, during which a cell sample is taken from the cervix, and is later examined, in order to detect any changes in the cervix and if any abnormal cells are present.olympus olympus colposcope may also be performed if smear results are consistently inadequate, or for other reasons, such as bleeding between periods (inter-menstrual), bleeding experienced after sexual intercourse, or an abnormal or unusual appearance of the cervix.

If the investigation is for abnormal cells, they are generally regarded as being pre-cancerous, which means if they are left untreated, they could become cancerous in the future. However, if the abnormal cells are found at this early stage, the chances of cancer actually developing are very small indeed. They may develop, but usually over a number of years, so they can be treated quickly and easily. Therefore it is important for women to be reassured that there is little need to worry, and in 90% of cases, the pre-cancerous condition is eliminated.
